Huyton station now forms part of the Merseyrail "City Line" but sits on the route of the original Liverpool and Manchester Railway of 1829 which was the worlds first inter-city railway. The photo on the left taken in the mid 1970s shows platforms 3 and 4 still in place after they had been taken out of service. Grass can be seen growing between the platforms from the track bed. These platforms (which have since been demolished) had served trains travelling to and from Wigan before the station was converted to two track operation.
Old stone sleepers from the original Liverpool and Manchester Railway can be seen reused in the base of the wall of the main station building on platform 1.
