Lord Woolton was born in 1883 as Frederick James Marquis in Salford, England but Liverpool became his adopted city. He became the first Lord Woolton in 1939 on the recommendation of Neville Chamberlain. He was chairman of the large Lewis's Department Store in Liverpool and also had a career as a politician which included having a seat on Winston Churchill's wartime cabinet.
Sarah Randle Kelly got to know Lord Woolton earlier in his life, when she too was a lot younger. It is not known how exactly how they first met and possibly it was during his period of doing social work in Liverpool. Sarah's husband William Henry Halsall had worked on the Liverpool docks, with which Lord Woolton had also been associated. Later in life (possibly in the 1950s), they had a reunion at Liverpool Town hall (shown in the photo on the right). They both died during the 4th quarter of 1964.
