There has been a large group of Furbys in the Yorkshire area of England. The origin of the name appears to be three small villages. Two are "North Ferriby" and "South Ferriby" (modern spellings) and are situated either side of the Humber River. A third is near Bedale and is called "Fearby" (modern spelling). There are also two small villages called "Firby", one of which is a few miles south of Malton. The earliest record I have for my own spelling of the surname is for a Jane Furby who was christened 25th May 1605 at Askham Bryan.
