During my grandfather's, John William Furby's almost 24 year period working for the Royal Navy, he spent two years on HMS Teal. He joined HMS Teal on the 4th of March 1908 and left the ship on 18th of March 1910. HMS Teal spent many years on the Yangtze River in China (shown on the adjacent map).

HMS Teal was completed on the 18th of May, 1901 and was a "Moorhen Class River Gunboat" of 180 tons. She served on the Yangtze and West Rivers between 1901 and 1914. The ship was eventually sold in Shanghai in October 1931.
