Around the village of Selham there is a Sussex name of Ferribee which is pronounced "Furby".

From the IGI, it can be seen that Furbys were in Sussex as early as the 16th century. For example there was Robert Furbie who married on 2nd December 1583 in Sussex. However, there are even earlier records going back as far as 1332 in the case of Richard Furby who was connected with Peccham & Bletchington. In 1448 John Furby and "others" granted a tenement to Lewes Church.

Two 16th century Furbys are also recorded in wills. In 1570 there was a Cyprian Furby who died at Battle and in 1575 there was a William Furby who died at Uckfield. North-east of Uckfield is Mayfield where a Richard Furby lived in 1658. In February of that year he purchased the parsonage house at Portslade near Brighton.

George Joseph Furby was born in the county about 1802 and his wife Jane died at Hackney,Middlesex in 1879. His children were born in Hastings while also having connections with the London area and some had similar occupations to my own Furbys such as plumber and painter, leading to the possibility that they are related to my own in some way. George Frederick Furby (born 1839 in Hastings) was a plumber resident at Clerkenwell, London in 1861. In 1829 a Thomas Adnet Furby, the son of Richard and Sarah was christened. This unusal name is the same as a child christened in my own family in 1830 at Shoreditch, London.
