Though Furby sounds like an Irish name, there are relatively few records of Furbys in Ireland. Some Furbys in France believe their ancestors did in fact come from Ireland. The earliest Irish Furby record on the IGI is for an Adelaide Firby who was born in 1832 in County Clare.
From US Immigration and Ellis Island Records, we know of a number of Irish Furbys arriving in the USA. Mary Furby, aged 21 and a spinster took a ship from Liverpool travelling in steerage class and arriving in New York on the 29th of April 1878. She sailed on the "City of Berlin" which stopped at Queenstown (Cork) en route.
The earliest birth found for Ireland is Alexander Ferby born about 1809 who arrived in New York in 1849 along with another Alexander born about 1847 and possibly his son. A Mrs Anne Ferby, born about 1830 in Meath arrived in New York in 1866 and a Gath Ferby who originated in Ireland arrived at Philadelphia in 1904.
